SANTORINI ~ Saint Irene the Greek Island in the Cyclades Greece ~ Thera or Thira
Santorini is well know as the Greek Island who's volcano erupted around 1500bc. Before the eruption Santorini was a circular island when the volcano erupted it took with it the centre of the island and now you see a semi circular island with a few rocks still poking out of the sea here and there.
The volcanic eruption was on a huge scale and is blamed for the demise of the Minoan civilisation on Crete. The island of Crete is south of Santorini and was apparently hit by a huge wall of water and probably the fall out of the volcano itself. If you visit north Crete, you can see evidence of volcanic ash and rock around the north coast of Crete. Excavations around the town of Akrotiri have unearthed evidence of an early Minoan society on Santorini as well. Please bear in mind that if you hire a car and take it off road Santorini, that the underneath may not be insured if you damage it on rocks or a rough road! A bike is a good idea to hire and if you decide to hire a bike on Santorini, please insist on a helmet and go very carefully as off road is obviously dangerous and the roads can get slippy in the heat.

Everyone jumped up to catch early photos of Santorini as the boat neared this spectacular Greek Island!
Island Hopping to Santorini Island Greece
Island hopping is extremely easy and very cheap around the Greek Islands including island hopping to the super scenic volcanic island of Santorini. Regular boats leave from most of the other Greek islands plus from Piraeus in Athens taking you by boat trip around these fantastic islands quickly and cheap!

Santorini blew its top over 3000 years ago allegedly putting an end to the advanced Minoan civilisation.
Meanwhile modern day Santorini residents are building any which way but loose! Houses, bars and studios and apartments cling to the remains of the crater created by the now extinct volcano!

You can see from these photos of Santorini the Greeks have build large villages and made windy paths down to the seashore. I spotted a huge new hotel complex being built on the top moulded into the shape of the rock. As for the photo bottom left, I could not locate any road or path to this little Greek church! Perhaps if I had been able to photograph it closer, there is a pully system? The ferry boat pulled into the arrival port, which had not changed or been renovated in any way since my last visit years and years ago! Most Greek studios and apartments remain extremely basic but the prices do not quite reflect their condition!
